The Traffic Safety Unit is comprised of 1 Corporal
and 13 school crossing guards. The corporal is responsible for
training, supervising and handling the day-to-day activities of the
school crossing guards. The unit is part of the Patrol Services
Division. Since it is part of the Patrol Services Division many of the
uniformed patrol officers are used for various traffic related
details. The Traffic Safety Unit, along with officers from the Patrol
Services Division, investigate approximately 450 motor vehicle
accidents each year. In addition, each year they issue approximately
6,000 motor vehicle summonses and make about 75 arrests for Driving
While Intoxicated (DWI).
The duties of the Traffic Safety Unit are very
diverse; they include conducting traffic surveys, reviewing site plans
for new and existing construction, conducting annual wrecker
inspections for license renewals for the 5 duty wreckers that are
currently used by the police department, maintaining the department’s
radar units, deployment of the speed monitoring trailer in areas that
are prone to speeders and consulting with traffic engineers and road
construction crews to develop and implement alternate or detour routes
for road closures. The unit is also available to meet with residents
about traffic concerns within their neighborhoods. The Traffic Safety
Unit, working in conjunction with the Patrol Services Division,
conducts proactive patrols to identify and correct hazards to the
motoring public such as: inoperable or defective traffic signals,
replacement of faded, damaged, defaced or missing traffic control
signs, ensure that roadways and crosswalks are properly identified and
striped, and identify and report hazardous road conditions to the
appropriate authority for immediate attention and repair. The Traffic
Safety Unit along with the Patrol Services Division is also
responsible for conducting selective enforcement programs that target
speeding, aggressive driving, DWI enforcement and seatbelt compliance
for both adults and children.
