Every
15 minutes Program
06/02/10 and 06/03/10
On June 2nd and 3rd 2010,
the Middlesex High School will participate in a drunk driving
awareness program entitled “Every 15 Minutes”. Those participating
will include junior and senior students, teachers, counselors, school
officials, police, fire, and rescue, OEM, New Jersey State Police,
Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and Medical Examiners Office,
Somerset County Medical Center, along with several community leader
volunteers. “Every 15 Minutes” offers real life experiences without
the real life risks. This emotionally charged event is designed to
dramatically instill teenagers with the potentially dangerous
consequences of drinking alcohol and driving. It will
challenge students to think about drinking and driving, think
about safety and the responsibilities of making mature decisions when
lives are involved.
The
program begins with the participation of volunteer students and their
parents. Throughout the first day of the event, the “Grim Reaper”
removes one student every fifteen (15) minutes from his/her
classroom. This represents how often someone is killed as a result of
an alcohol related accidents. White face makeup is applied to the
student and they are given a coroner’s tag and a black “Every 15
Minutes” t-shirt. These “victims” are then returned to the student
population, but are not allowed to interact with others.
Throughout the morning hours, uniformed police officers will make mock
death notifications to the parents of these children. As a
reminder, the parents have previously given their permission to be
involved.
On June 2nd
at 1:00 pm, a mock car accident is staged on the Middlesex High School
grounds at 300 JFK Drive involving an intoxicated student driver,
several injured students and a fatality to at least one student.
Juniors and seniors observe the accident scene as they witness rescue
workers cut the car away from the victims. A police officer goes
through the procedure for a DWI arrest, and the medical examiner will
remove the body of a “dead” student from the wreckage. The events are
videotaped to be shown on the following day. The volunteer students
(approximately 30) are then bused to a hotel for an overnight retreat
where they discuss their experience. They write letters to their
parents that start out, “Dear Mom and Dad, every fifteen minutes
someone in the United States dies as a result of an alcohol related
traffic collision, and today I died. I never had the chance to tell
you…” The parents of the “dead students” also write a letter to
their children, expressing the things they have not told them. The
student arrested for DWI is videotaped through a sped-up court
process. A videographer also follows the student that had been
removed from the wreckage and brought to the hospital.
On June 3rd
at 9:00 am, students are returned to the Middlesex High School
auditorium for an assembly. During the assembly the students, as well
as their parents, have a chance to read their letters out loud. The
auditorium will be set up as a simulated funeral home in which caskets
are present on the stage, along with photos of the “deceased”
students. A guest speaker, who is the mother of a child who died in
an alcohol related accident, will present an emotional account of her
experience. After the assembly, the volunteer students will go
outside and participate in an exercise entitled the “D.R.I.V.E.
Program” (Driver Response Impaired Vision Exercise), which is put on
by the New Jersey State Police. This exercise involves the students
driving golf carts on a designated course, while wearing impairment
simulated goggles.
This two day event is sure to impact the
students, as well as the numerous volunteers that have chosen to raise
awareness of the consequences of alcohol related accidents.
We encourage the media to attend and witness this event. All inquires
can be directed to Lt. Michael Colacci, Middlesex Police Department at
